Cat Food= The slums of the food/movie franchises

50/50-(R)

It was requested that I review this movie, and, seeing the positive feedback it got, rented it. It is about Adam, a normal guy who has a nagging pain in his back. He gets it checked out, and a bland doctor delivers a blow that sets off the movie. Adam has cancer. A comedy about cancer? How can this be pulled off without it being obnoxious? Cancer is a touchy subject, and so this movie, I’m sure, was a challenge. The three key points are acting, humor, and plot. The acting was Oscar worthy. Joseph Gordon-Levitt pulled off his character very well, and you see him change slowly. You get to understand him, and that’s important. Without understanding him, you don’t care about him. When the main character has cancer, it’s important to feel a connection, and I did. His best friend, Kyle, who is played by Seth Rogen, was also perfect. I am personally not a fan of Seth, and find him too unrealistically hyper, and an extreme jerk. But in this movie, Seth pulls it off. His take on the character was realistic, and provided comic relief. I would even go to lengths to say that I liked him in 50/50. The humor was juggled masterfully. It is a serious film, but it has lighthearted, funny moments that get you to laugh before submerging yourself in another sad scene. Seth Rogen’s character and a couple of old men diagnosed with cancer are the main comic relief, and boy do they make you laugh. This movie is a deep one, and humor is peppered around a perfect amount. It’s funny without being offensive, but it’s emotional as well. Accomplishing that is difficult. Lastly, the plot was well paced. All of the plot points are relatable and realistic. All of us have known someone or had a connection to someone who is or has suffered from cancer, and so I’m sure that the overprotective mother and sympathetic therapist can be related to and understood. The only weak point, in my opinion, was the dog. It could have been incorporated a bit more, but I understand why it wasn’t. Over all, 50/50 is a T-Bone. It could be deemed Filet and I would understand, but to me, it was very great, not outstanding. It’s emotional, it’s funny, and it’s strong. Gordon-Levitt truly deserved an Oscar nomination for this movie. I recommend it to everyone who wants a night filled with laughs and some tears. 50/50 is one you should see.

Interesting Fact: Joseph Gordon-Levitt accepted the role 2 days before shooting started.

Dinner for Schmucks-(PG-13)

I find it funny how I’m posting this on the Comedies page. The only thing funny about this movie is how some people found it funny. This movie is about Tim, a business man who comes up with an idea for his company. I believe the idea was lamps made of old war bombs. At first, the company thinks it’s a joke, but Tim announces that he has a person willing to buy them…some Swedish billionaire. The company is thrilled, and his boss offers him a new, empty office…under circumstances. Tim has to, first, have the deal go well, and second, has to attend a dinner in which each business man must bring the biggest idiot to dinner. Tim is thrilled, but once his girlfriend finds out about the dinner, she stops him…Tim was not going to attend, but drives into a man named Barry, who is an idiot. The rest is pretty much Barry screwing up Tim’s life and causing havoc. Comedy is always hard to judge, because everybody has a different sense of humor. In my opinion, it was unfunny and boring. It dragged on and on and I laughed twice. The jokes were bland and stale, Barry was awkward, and the movie just felt underachieved. It was one of those movies that make you think: This is so stupid. Why am I watching this? Go on thesaurus.com and type in stupid. You’ll find synonyms like brainless, dopey, dumb, foolish, half-witted, thick-headed, witless, and other words. Every single word describes this horrible, disgrace of a movie. This goes onto my least favorite movies list, and now it joins Nacho Libre, Mr. Bean’s Holiday and  District 9. This movie is not worth your time, your money, or your ears. This is, to say the least, crap. This is amateur, unfunny, and plain bad. If you laugh at all, you’ll laugh once or twice, and that’s because you force it upon yourself. How this flick made it to the big screen, i don’t know. This isn’t even worth a dollar. This is Cat Food. Horrible.

Interesting Facts: The guy who has a puppet is actually a professional ventriloquist comedian in real life.

Red-(PG-13)-(Blue-Ray worthy)

I spotted Bruce Willis and Morgan Freeman in the trailer, and that was enough for me! I decided to see this movie to see if these two great stars could shine together, along with some other great actors. Red stands for RETIRED EXTREMELY DANGEROUS, by the way. This movie is about Frank Moses, a retired CIA agent. He leads a boring life, his only joy being his conversations on the phone to a government pension processing center worker, Sarah. When he is attacked at his home after being retired for so long, he gets suspicious and re-recruits the old group he used to operate with and gets back into the action for answers…sounds like an overused plot for an action movie…wrong. What makes this movie its own is that these agents are mostly over 60 years old. Imagine old actors and actresses put into 007-like sequences…that was this movie! Thankfully, it’s not to be taken seriously, because its a comedy. The two keys points to Red were the comedy and the characters. The comedy was hilarious. Then again, all great comedy is hilarious….so to describe this comedy, I’ll say that it wasn’t corny Austin Powers humor, but it wasn’t fully blown Hangover humor. It was a humor that was applied to the movie when needed. Unlike Superhero Movie and Disaster Movie, which push the humor to occur every second so that you can’t even take it seriously, this movie can carry out a basic plot without breaking the serious scene with unnecessary humor. The snappy dialogue and easy to understand, easy to roll with humor is fresh and will keep you smiling. It had fast, funny humor that shined all the way through the end.The stars leave their big egos out the door for this film and act like old friends, sharing the spotlight and allowing their companions to work their lines when it was their turn to crack a joke.

It was easy to swallow, and when mixed with a plot that was extremely out there and unrealistic, it was enough to create a believable act for the characters. The characters were great, and added spice to the movie. Though there wasn’t any Angelina Jolie involved, the characters kept you entertained. Once Angelina Jolie turns 60, she’ll probably look the same, so I’m not worried ;) Anyways, the characters were amazing. Frank Moses was the action hero of the movie, Marvin Boggs was completely nuts (but always right), Victoria was the tough chick, Joe Matheson was an old man with an eye for women, Ivan was the loving Russian, and so on. The movie elaborates on all the characters as the movie goes on. If you’re looking for an easy laugh with action, go with Red. Rent Red. This T-Bone was bright red, and aged perfectly.

Interesting facts: While filming in Toronto, residents reported gun-fire, mistaking it for the real thing.

When Sarah Ross throws the beer can at Frank Moses, its empty, but she just opened it.

The Hangover-(R) (Blu Ray worthy)

This is one of the most popular comedies ever, so I decided to stop delaying myself and watch it. Personally, comedies are near the bottom of my “to see” list. That doesn’t mean I hate them, it means I’d rather see an action movie or a Sci-Fi. Either way, I regret waiting so long to see this hilarious movie. I was blown away at how hysterical it was. The movie is about four friends who host a bachelor party in Las Vegas. When they wake up in the morning, after the party night, they are confused and worried. One of their friends, Doug, is missing, and his wedding is days away. There is a baby, a tiger, a chicken, and a mess in the villa they partied in, and the men cannot remember anything.

They follow clues and  evidence, so they could find Doug and get him to his wife before the wedding. So many funny things and lines are presented, that make you laugh so hard that you can’t hear the next lines that are spoken. The two key points to the movie were the plot and the comedy. The plot was simple, but enough to attract the guys: Comedy taking place in Las Vegas. The plot was so ridiculous and so well paced that it makes sense, while, at the same time, it is so out there. It was well thought out and was constructed for thousands of laughs. The comedy was so varied and casual that it was impossible NOT to laugh. Some lines were corny and common, and others were fresh into the game. It’s hard to give some lines without bleeping out letters, so how about you all see this for yourself. It is so smartly scripted and the jokes are put in the right spots for the right characters. The music was also varied, from Right Round to Joker and the Thief to Who Let the Dogs Out. It is modern and a strictly for the guys. Get this on Blu-Ray, invite all of your guy friends over, turn up the sound loud, and get ready to lose your voice laughing. There will be a sequel to it, so until then, I probably won’t see a comedy as funny as this one. This is a Filet Mignon, minus the pepper and drugs the tiger ate.

Interesting facts: When Stu lost his tooth, it wasn’t fake. He had a fake tooth and took it out for further scenes.

Ken Jeong, the guy who leaps out of the trunk, was originally supposed to wear clothes, but Ken insisted that he be naked….

Lindsay Lohan was offered the role as Stu’s wife, but turned the role down, because she read the script and thought the movie would stink…..big mistake on her part!

Due Date-(R)-(Blu-Ray worthy)

Before I stepped into the movie theater, I was having some second thoughts about this comedy…why? Well…Robert Downey Jr. in a comedy? Jamie Foxx? Then again, I was only thinking of the trailer, which usually misleads people. The thing about reviewing comedies is that everybody has different tastes of funny. Some people like more Hangover funny, and some people lean towards corny, Austin Powers and Ace Ventura comedy. This comedy wasn’t necessarily corny, though not as laugh out loud as the Hangover. The story is basically about Peter (Robert Downey Jr.) and Ethan (Zach Galifianakis). Peter’s wife is coming closer to her due date for her baby, and Peter is put on the no fly list, while he is on business somewhere else in the country. Ethan, who he meets on the plane, offers to drive him to Los Angeles. Peter hesitantly accepts and the two drive to Los Angeles. They face many hardships and arguments, twists and characters.

The two key points to Due Date were comedy and acting. The comedy was not all too new, and repetitively corny and dark. Still, there were some great laughs and smiles you couldn’t hold back. When you laughed, you felt guilty, because it is so cruel and rude to laugh at some of the humor. (Including Peter’s horrible babysitting.) You’ll slap yourself for laughing at kids getting hurt, a disabled man, a man trying to let go of his father’s ashes, and a man crying. Only AFTER you stop laughing you realize that you weren’t supposed to laugh. The acting shown was right on the dot. Robert Downey Jr. makes his role look like nothing, like usual, and Zach Galifianakis is great for playing comedic roles, as proven by The Hangover. Jamie Foxx didn’t really have much to say, but his spit take was pretty decent. The mother did her huffing and puffing well, and the story came together very well. You’ll find yourself jumping halfway to the ceiling when Ethan finds a firearm, and some situations just keep you rooting for the characters. This comedy wasn’t as funny as we expected it to be, but it was simple, fun, and funny, to say the least. It wasn’t horrible, so it’s a Porkchop. Not TOO memorable, but worth your watch.

The Spy Next Door-(PG)-(Blu-Ray worthy)

Wow. This movie was a roller coaster ride! It is about a secret spy named Bob Ho (Jackie Chan). He watches his girlfriend’s 3 children while she’s away for a trip, and he is in big trouble. He has just retired being a spy, but is faced with a traitor in the agency. He doesn’t know who to trust. At the same time, he is constantly attacked by Russian soldiers, while dealing with an enerjetic little girl, smart, creative, and lying boy, and a hot stubborn girl:)  This movie has 3 keys points: Publicity, action, and humor. The publicity of the movie was huge. There were lots of interesting commercials, but to add to that, there were many famous actors in it: George Lopez, Billy Ray Cyrus, Jackie Chan, etc. The commercials show a little girl blowing up a buff Russian, the teen saying,”You don’t feed a pig bacon…that’s just wrong”, and Jackie Chan doing some cool moves with a bike. That’s what got me interested. The action in the movie couldn’t match up to 007 gunfights, but Jackie Chan and his unpredictable moves are AMAZING. He uses bikes, ladders, chairs, knives, equipment, and used anything he could find to knock the sense out of the bad guys.

I LOVED the action. It was new and fresh. There were such cool stunts, new too. And the humor in this movie was OK. Between the kids and Jackie, it was funny at times, but not with the bad guys. there were probably 3 laugh out loud moments that were worth it. Another T Bone here!

Interesting Facts: The cat Bob saves is a different cat when its in the girl’s arms

The Toothfairy-(PG)

This movie IS NOT amazing, but decent. It is about a hockey player who is nicknamed the toothfairy…..cause he knocks out players’ teeth almost every match. Then, after almost telling his daughter that the toothfairy didn’t exist, he is summoned to be a toothfairy. Then there are family and fairy problems that come along. Why is the movie for the whole family? Well lets look at a little girl’s perspective: They like the movie because of the cats, the whole flying fairy stuff, magic wands, and how Dwayne the Rock Johnson is a fairy. That’s all they realize. Next is a teen boy’s perspectve: They see the movie as a girly, fruity movie…until they watch it. Lots of it is Hardcorehockey action, along with a cool band performance at the end, understandable humor, and hockey talk. Plus, its interesting to see whether the Toothfairy will get caught on duty. (But the movie sucked) It was missing a lot, however. There are tons of movies out there, and spending money and time on this will leave you upset, because it was not worth it. Still, noone likes the idea of Dwayne Johnson in a pink tutu.

I was disappointed that I had a Hotdog with no bun.

Interesting facts: When kids want autographs from Derek Thompson in the beginning, they yell: Mr. Johnson! instead of Mr. Thompson

  2. sgt hell says:

I have figured out the riddle this week the picture of the tiger is in the Hang over review. The first line is the group of people running around sin city or las vegas. the main characters are metaphorical wolves. In the second line the large jungle cat is the tiger that was in the hang over. In the last line the pepperish feast because in the movie the main characters covered a steak with seasoning that was supposed to knock the tiger out. There all the lines and the picture location.

  3. sgt hell says:

OOps the third line means charlie shean and a couple years ago he said that he had some tiger blood in him.
