Think-a-Bit Thursday: Zombieland and the Zombie Apocalypse

With the recent zombie outbreak, why not talk about the zombie apocalypse? “But Ddog! This isn’t philosophical!” I assure you, it is. If zombies ever do take over, you will refer back to this post and thank me for being so helpful. In Zombieland, there is a zombie apocalypse. People struggle for survival. The question this week is: How would you deal with the zombie apocalypse?

Let’s start with when news breaks out. When the government announces that zombies are among us. Noone is safe. Our neighbors could be infected. If this news was given to me, I would instantly stock up on nonperishable food, water, and invest money in firearms. I would pack supplies essential to survival, assuming that communication and government support such as electricity and AC were cut off. That would include flashlights, first-aid supplies, a watch, a cell phone, a radio.  The cell probably wouldn’t work, but it’s not heavy. I could carry it just in case. I would also need supplies that would help me hole up in a structure. This would include locks, boards, nails, chains, and safes. A safe house that I would find acceptable would be a two story house on high ground, preferably in a country-side location rather than a city-based one. The country-side has less people and more hills than cities do. High ground is key. It allows you to overwatch a position and control it. A basement is also important. It would serve as storage and a last resort safe area.

Like they say in real estate, it’s all about location, location, location. Now that you have a location, what do you do? Do you sit there eating Ramen noodles for the rest of your life? No. If I have enough supplies and room, I’d invite close family and friends over to survive with me. I would contact them somehow and tell them where I am, obviously making sure they pitch in by also bringing food and supplies. But once they’re there, I wouldn’t simply let them eat canned food and take up space. We would have to join together and do work. We would have someone who overwatches the property through a window. Someone else who checks the locks and barriers. Another who tries to communicate with other people through radio. The jobs are limitless.

That is how I’d handle a zombie apocalypse. Round up my family, be well prepared, and live it out until the zombies are dealt with by military force and/or nuclear holocaust. Hey, the question never had anything to do with surviving radiation 🙂
